Requirements analysis report

Executive summary:

The aim of this document is to analyze the state of the art and investigate the requirements of the energy management and demand response use cases. Additionally, user behavior patterns are outlined, and necessary test data are described. Based on this, typical scenarios for a simulation-based evaluation and requirements regarding a semantic information model are defined.
One goal of BProfEM is to use semantic enriched data based on OWL ontology to identify predefined patterns and improve the quality of the optimization algorithms for energy management systems. This kind of information focuses on energy consumption, scheduled tasks and their time variability, priorities, and user comfort requirements as well as energy market and grid state information.
The identified and selected energy related uses cases were categorized in demand response and energy management as well as optimization strategy and data services. In addition, use cases are defined for the behavior patterns of users, which influence directly the energy consumption and the energy management system.
In order to derive the user behavior patterns and profiles, real-world data are selected and further analyzed. Thereby, data sets of single family houses, multifamily houses and office buildings are used to cover different types of building utilization. Based on this information (e.g. electric energy consumption, the room temperature, or indoor/outdoor CO2 level), data mining algorithms are adopted for pattern recognition.
For creating the semantic energy management system information model, a requirements analysis was performed, which was done by examination of the selected use cases in order to identify necessary semantic information concepts. Thereby, a few ontologies are identified that cover parts of the desired application domain (e.g. W3C Time ontology, DBpedia ontology), but there exists no ontology that suffices all requirements.
